Before any interviews take time to research the company you are applying to. Lots of information is available on the internet, and you should have a good general knowledge of the employers’ history and future direction.
First impressions count. Arrive in good time, firmly shake hands, and smile.
Personal hygiene is important – so make sure you are well groomed.
Dress appropriately for the job you are applying for. A suit is the standard form of dress for management, but might not be appropriate for an informal position or informal company.
Don’t let your nerves get to you. Don’t slouch, fidget, mutter, waffle or clam up.
Speak clearly, giving precise and thought out answers.
If you need time to think you can always stall by saying something like “that’s a good question”
If you don’t understand a question, ask the interviewer to elaborate.
Don’t try to answer a question you don’t know the answer to. It’s better to be thought of as foolish, rather than open your mouth and confirm it. Instead say that you need to give the question more thought before you can reply.
Never criticise a former employer or colleague.
